for reference i got 8.47.3 working this afternoon on hardy via envyng setup plus missing(?) package xorg-driver-fglrx-dev-envy.
i'm not sure if it is actually this follow-up package itself or a side effect (re-configures some DKMS stuff), but it consistently activates OpenGL and DRI for me after a fresh envyng.
what i did was simply:
1) sudo envyng -t (automatic install ATI driver)
2) sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx-dev-envy
... and reboot

ps: i've downloaded but haven't tried the 8.5 ATI release yet -- just happy to be up and running at all again after upgrading to hardy. 8.5 came out last week http:// ati.amd. com/support/ drivers/ linux/linux- radeon. html
