I have exactly the same problem on my Lenovo T60 / Ubuntu 8.04, linux kernel 2.6.24-16-generic and fglrx 2.1.7412. The system freezes about twice a day when left idle for some time.
Lots of soft lockup errors are written to the syslog ("BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 11s! [Xorg:5856]").
