Apparently my crashes were caused by a stick of memory that suddenly
went bad. It seems strange that the backtrace was always the same
(though I also developed kernel panics, etc), but memtest showed many
errors, and after locating the bad DRAM and removing it, the crashes
went away.
I doubt that everyone else's crashes are caused by bad memory, but if
you have time, it's probably worth running memtest (let it run all the
tests; only 2 of 7 found errors for me).
