I've checked and double checked, it does seem that I can suspend and resume (with about 66.6% success rate) with the new fglrx 7.12 release. On this HP NC 8430 with X1600 mobility, I have an up to date Gutsy install with the latest ATI drivers installed via Envy. Setting "DOUBLE_CONSOLE_SWITCH=true" in the /etc/default/acpi-support greatly increased my success rate (from about 1 in 3 tries to 2 in 3 tries).

I would have been quite happy, were it not for the fact that my laptop has a 1680x1050 panel, and this new driver somehow can't activate this resolution (known issue).

I'd be curious to hear about other suspend/resume experiences using this combination.

Some basic info:
$ uname -a
Linux meep2 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Tue Dec 18 08:02:57 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon X1600
OpenGL version string: 2.1.7170 Release

$ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes
