Yeah, this is a really bad documented issue when building a custom kernel. Ubuntu ships the kernel config file with ENABLED debug info, although the kernel is build without this feature, (see Kernel-Hacking category) which you have to disable first. I have search a long time to find this out, posted tens of questions into forums and nobody seemed to know this as nobody answered. Finally I found the answer in the official Ubuntu WIKI (search for "custom kernel").
