The earlier workaround suggested of
Create this file: /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-fglrx
Put this in it: blacklist fglrx
Reboot.
Worked famously. I know I can't use the cool compiz stuff or other 3D jazz, but for those who just need stuff to work in a basic way, this works around the problem.
