Similar problem here (Ubuntu 8.04, Intel 852 chipset).

When the X-server tries to do something, that makes the screen flicker (switching users, logging out, shutting down), in 33% of all cases, the system crashes completely (blank screen, absolutely nonresponsive to anything).

The provided fix does NOT work for me, as I'm experiencing these problem with an intel 852 chipset and the fix apparently only works for ATI-hardware.

So, is there any workaround for non-Ati hardware (Intel anyone?)??
