Apparently one can install the archived driver with restricted installed as well.
When I do a full purge on all of the restricted bits, /sbin/lrm-video ceases to exist. This will result in X generating the "lrm-video" not found error when it attempts to load the NVidia module. modprobe nvidia will generate the same error.
I wasn't able to get the nvidia module to take with the restricted packages installed -- the newly compiled libraries seemed to be awol. Followed the blacklisting technique as well. The commenting out of the line pertains only to installations without the restricted packages.
