I have recently upgraded to nvdida-glx-new in an attempt to fix this problem, and still see black windows after ~ 5-6 apps open.

My graphics card is identified as:

03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV43 [GeForce 6600 GT] (rev a2)
