Thanks for your bug report. Could you please add the full output of 'lspci -vv' and 'lspci -vvn' as attachments to your bug report? In addition which version of Ubuntu did you notice this with? Thanks in advance.

Could you please also add the full output of 'dmesg' after booting up and getting the wireless to work via depmod? Thanks again.

well... ;-/... it works when I reboot now so the issue seems to have gone away. At this point I think the best thing I can do is do a clean reinstall and see if the problem happens again and take it from there.

I'm attaching the dmesg output anyway. I will do a clean reinstall soon from the daily cd build of the day and see how it goes. Will update the bug when I do this.

Great thanks for taking the time to test this further. I will be
interested to see what you find out.

After a clean install and installing the various packages one by one I found that it has nothing to do with depmod apparently. I just happen to always install fglrx along with kernel restricted modules. All that it is is that the restricted modules are needed in order for the wireless networking to work.

So to get wireless networking working on this machine it was a simple:

sudo apt-get install linux-generic

which brings in all the linux-restricted-modules-generic stuff. We should probably change the bug description to reflect this.

The 18 month support period for Feisty Fawn 7.04 has reached its end of life some months ago.
As a result, we are closing the linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20 task.
It would be helpful if you could test the new Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 release
and confirm if this issue remains - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/904overview.
If the issue still exists with the Jaunty release, please update this report by changing
the Status of the "linux (Ubuntu)" task from "Incomplete" to "New". Thanks in advance!
