I have just installed the same version of ubuntu against the same hardware, but this time x86 version rather than x86_64.
I have the same problem on x86 as well as x86_64 the vesa driver works at the correct resolution, but the nvidia driver will not.
the current system is
root@smith:~# uname -a
Linux smith 2.6.15-26-k7 #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Aug 3 03:40:32 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux
The two areas of concern seem to show the nvidia drivers and my monitors.
From a basic point of view it either looks like the nvidia drivers to not like these monitors/have a problem, or a better Xorg configuration for these monitors is needed.
