I have tried installing linux-386 instead with no success.

I have tried building alsa using the module-assistant with no success.

Sound worked fine under Feisty for amd64.

Sound also worked fine when I upgraded Feisty for amd64 to Gutsy.

The problem only arose when I did a fresh install using the 32 bit operating system.
