I also just tried:

kvm -kernel lucid-server-uec-amd64-vmlinuz-virtual -hda lucid-server-uec-amd64.img -curses -append "root=/dev/sda fb=0"

This, too, works, until we go into graphic mode. Plymouth, I suppose?
