I've been using Thunderbird with Lightning but NOT the Google Provider extension for the past couple of weeks and had no crashes at all. I then installed Provider yesterday and have started experiencing the crashes again, so it does seem to be Provider that's the problem. I just filed a bug report using apport, it can be seen here:
