1. Boot up computer.
2. Select my user
3. Type password and press enter
4. results in nothing but my desktop background

Completely consistent.
Both stock kernel and 3.3 rc7 from Mainline Builds.
This was since about a week ago, perhaps lightdm or unity upgrade, I assume.
Only for my user. Other existing users and new, encrypted home, user can login.
Workaround is to restart lightdm.
