Same problem here.
Additionally: I manage to connect with the display-update script (thanx for the solution!),
but my connection with ssvnc crashes the lightdm(-gtk-greeter) within a few seconds and thus X-server and the session.
Restarting lightdm refuses any vnc afterwards. Restart needed.
Still lookin' at the logs to learn more.
I run a desktop Lubuntu 14.04 LTS and a laptop Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and they both have the same problem.
