Another note regarding the sluggishness: the slowdown is not just visual (i.e. metacity's animations).
Steps to reproduce:
1. Open a firefox window, maximized.
2. Click on the minimize button of firefox's window, and immediately move the mouse in a circular or zig-zag motion.
It appears that minimizing and maximizing applications affect even the mouse, causing interruption/jerkiness in movement.
Also, I noticed when using tsclient to make a vnc or rdp connection to another connection, if I switch from fullscreen to windowed, there is often a very large delay when switching modes (~2 secs to render the window), whereas using the downgraded packages, there's no delay at all.
