Salva, just to make sure, could you configure /etc/avahi/avahi-daemon.conf to include:

host-name=randomhostname

and then restart avahi-daemon:

service avahi-daemon-restart (lucid)
/etc/init.d/avahi-daemon restart (pre lucid)
