On my system, libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio crackles too, probably because of a different bug. I have reported it a few months ago: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libsdl1.2/+bug/188986 .

However, libsdl1.2debian-esd seems to work fine
