I believe at this time only .wb2 is supported, I do confirm the crash, but since it's not a supported format I think this should be marked invalid as a bug.
You can use Gnumeric to open the .wb3 file, I successfully opened it without issue, this is also in the repositories.
You might already know this but you can install gnumeric from a terminal by using the following command:
sudo apt-get install gnumeric
I would go to OpenOffice.org and find out more about submitting that enhancement request.
