Bug Description

While "saving" the mouse-buttons don't react to browse in the menu structure as usual e.g. in a filebrowser like nautilus.
(But I'm not sure if it has something to do with the gnome-shell of Ubuntu.)

Can you tell me more? What model of mouse are you using? So you click save and while the save dialog is up, these mouse buttons don't do anything - what do you expect to happen?

I would expect to geht back with one mouse-button for the thumb, if I was in the wrong folder, as I can do in Firefox, or Nautilus.

Yep I reproduced this with a M510 mouse. After enabling the mouse buttons (I never use them) and starting xbindkeys I see that my forward and backward thumb buttons work in Firefox (did not before these steps):

$ sudo apt install xvkbd xbindkeys
$ cat ~/.xbindkeysrc
# Mouse Buttons
"xvkbd -xsendevent -text "\[XF86Back]""
m:0x0 + b:8
"xvkbd -xsendevent -text "\[XF86Forward]""
m:0x0 + b:9
$ xbindkeys

And these thumb buttons have no effect in the Libreoffice save dialog. But they don't seem to have an effect in any save dialog.. I also tried various save dialogs in: firefox, gimp, gedit.

So I think this is a gnome dialog issue.

Further investigation reveals that an app needs to implement the back/forward navigation in the file chooser. In the meantime, you can try this suggestion for enabling these buttons globally:

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/64957969/can-i-set-up-a-global-gtk-accelerator-for-mouse-buttons
