I can add a few notes, as it's happened a few times since I wrote the above.
On each occasion, I've had:
- several documents open in Writer
- one is moderately large (93k words)
- at least one has changes needing to be saved.

If I save the modified doc, CPU usage stays at 100% for soffice.
If I close the large doc, CPU drops to negligible.
If I reopen the large doc, CPU goes back to 100% for up to a minute, then returns to negligible.
