It may very well be a difference in which combination of packages I have installed, or desktop environment choice that makes the difference (I'm using gnome-session-fallback).

Hence, would you mind advising:
+ Which desktop environment(s) are you using where the WORKAROUND works for you in?
+ Are you using the upstream or downstream version of LibreOffice?
+ Are you using a 32-bit or 64-bit OS?
+ Could you please execute the following in a terminal and post the results here:
apt-show-versions -r libreoffice*
