I could reproduce the bug with a user to make libreoffice fail and make libreoffice start normally.
Problem is related to me having my homedire not under /home/user but under another mountpoint /data/home/user
The bug persists even if /etc/password contains /data/home/user
If /etc/passwd contains /home/user which is a symlink to /data/home/user, libreoffice won't start.
If I move the homdirectory completely to /home/user, the libreoffice starts without problems.
I have this same bug on 17.10, more details here /ubuntuforums. org/showthread. php?t=2385813& p=13743523# post13743523

This was tested with a newly created user.
