In other way, I think that remove the icons is a bad decision. The icons creates better usability (with quick actions) and more beautiful interfaces. Please, think in it. That Windows Vista or Mac OX don't uses icons, isn't a reason (as upstream bug said).

What about GNOME guideline? http://library.gnome.org/devel/hig-book/stable/controls-buttons.html.en The buttons uses icons.
