This gnome bug is really interesting... :)
Just a quote: if you want to restore icons with gconf-editor (/desktop/gnome/interface/buttons_have_icon, menus_have_icon), remember to not to run it with sudo, because that changes settings for root (and that's why you won't see the effect).
