FYI this bug has now wasted a week's worth of my time in trying to upgrade
packages that previously worked A-OK in my environments on NetBSD (i386, alpha,
and sparc). Confusion with weird pthread problems on SMP machines, along with
the fact that this bugzilla database doesn't seem to be indexed very well by
google didn't help of course. :-)

It's now a complete show-stopper for me for any and all applications needing
gtk2+.

gtk-demo is a great canonical example program that crashes on all platforms I've
tested.

Note that prior to these upgrades all the applications I'm attempting to upgrade
worked OK even on monochrome displays (albiet with some invisible features
whenever too many colours are used in proximity with each other by the
application).

Note of course that the bug is still present in 1.0.4 as well.

I'll be testing out the patch suggested in a recent comment.
