Bug Description

Binary package hint: language-support-translations-en

Upon doing a dist-upgrade on Kubuntu, I get this:

The following NEW packages will be installed:
  doc-base docbook-xml evolution-documentation-en gnome-doc-utils gvfs gvfs-backends libbonobo2-0 libbonobo2-common
  libbonoboui2-0 libbonoboui2-common libcdio-cdda0 libcdio-paranoia0 libcdio7 libfreezethaw-perl libgail-common libgail18
  libgnome2-0 libgnome2-common libgnomecanvas2-0 libgnomecanvas2-common libgnomeui-0 libgnomeui-common libgvfscommon0
  liblaunchpad-integration1 libmldbm-perl libproxy0 librarian0 libsoup-gnome2.4-1 libsoup2.4-1 libuuid-perl sgml-data
  xsltproc xulrunner-1.9 yelp
The following packages will be upgraded:
  language-support-translations-en
1 upgraded, 34 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 12.8MB/13.7MB of archives.

Both thunderbird and evolution docs and deps, which are not part of the Kubuntu (KDE) desktop, are being forcably installed.

Since space on the CD is limited, and that these applications have no relevance to Kubuntu, I would like to suggest we change this.

A discussion about this has occurred in #ubuntu-devel on Feb 23 (cjwatson, ArneGoetje and seb128 have suggested some alternatives).

The immediate issue here can be worked around by making evolution-documentation-*'s dependencies lighter. We have no solution for language-support-translation-en's dependencies at present.

This bug was fixed in the package evolution - 2.25.91-0ubuntu2

---------------
evolution (2.25.91-0ubuntu2) jaunty; urgency=low

  * debian/control:
    - Permit language-support-translations-LL as an alternative to yelp in
      evolution-documentation-LL's dependencies, to make language-support-*
a bit more lightweight for Kubuntu users (LP: #333401).

Please, forget me if I am wrong. I did understand that it was fixed since package 2.25.91, but the problem still persist in package 2.26.1.
The packages evolution-documentation-LL is installed for every language available in the system, in my case English and Spanish. See the attached picture, It is a screen shot of Synaptic package manager showing evolution-documentation-es and evolution-documentation-en installed in my Kubuntu 9.04 which is up-to-date. When trying to remove them the package manager automatically select the dependents packages language-support-translation-en/es respectively to be removed too.

Thanks

This bug is still present in oneiric: language-support-translations-en shouldn't depend on evolution-documentation-en! It could recommend it instead of depending on it, but it's not even necessary as evolution is no longer included in the CD!

@Yann I ran into the same problem in Oneiric, but in fact language-support-translations-en no longer exists in Oneiric at all! It hasn't existed for ages. Somehow for both you and me a previous upgrade failed to remove it from our systems.

Thanks Tristan! I didn't thought about checking if it was still needed. I've let aptitude uninstall it, then.
