Thanks, Martin. Unfortunately I can't reproduce your "Not authorized." case:

$ pkcheck --action-id com.ubuntu.languageselector.setsystemdefaultlanguage --process $$
polkit\56retains_authorization_after_challenge=1
Authorization requires authentication and -u wasn't passed.
$ groups
test-std
$ cat /etc/polkit-1/localauthority.conf.d/51-ubuntu-admin.conf
[Configuration]
AdminIdentities=unix-group:sudo;unix-group:admin

What kind of 'magic' is it you use? ;-)
