My VPN is set using this parameters:

VPN Server Address
Pre-shared Key
Protocols (PAP, CHAP)
Username and password
Route (internal route, 192.168.0.0, netmask 255.255.255.0)

Everything is left by default in L2tpIPsecVpn

Using the same settings works really great in other Ubuntu versions (10.04 to 11.10).
