Maybe you just misunderstood me. I know Edgy use upstart, and I can see messages in the usplash screen if I use the following boot enrties in the menu.lst file:
itle Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.17-10-generic root (hd0,7) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-10-generic root=/dev/hda8 ro splash vga=791 initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-10-generic quiet savedefault boot
Just test it yourself, you will recognize there are messages on the usplash screen.
My problem is not "I can see boot messages". My problem is the messages are to dark.
