This would need to be adjusted in the kubuntu plymouth theme, to make it friendly to 16-color displays (which is what we're left with when using the nvidia binary drivers).

Steve, how does Aubergine look on 16 colors? Does the Ubuntu theme also face this same issue? I hate to lame out a theme because of a crappy driver, but I guess we need happy people.

Confirming, seen the same on at least 4 completely different machines, but all running Kubuntu Lucid Beta2 AMD64.
As long as NVidia proprietary drivers are not installed, Plymouth is fine.
As soon as NVIdia proprietary drivers get installed, Plymouth becomes ugly (kind of 640x480 16 colors corresponding to the pic that the bug reporter attached).
Annoying for it gives the false first impression that "Linux is ugly" when trying to show people and friends how Kubuntu is great ;-)
Is Ubuntu's Plymouth logo supposed to work better than Kubuntu's with NVidia drivers ?

Jens Cornelis (mail-jenscornelis) wrote : | #19 |
I tryed out the available plymouth-themes.
For all of them (using nvidia-proprietary driver) the resolution is wrong and colors look extremely ugly.
But the plymouth-theme from Ubuntu still looks best, as they are not using this much colors.

It seems I fixed this bug, obviously the result is the same you can find in plymouth-theme from Ubuntu, this means no native monitor resolution but it looks best than before ;)
So...need testers, add this in your sources.list:
deb http://
then upgrade, you should have now kubuntu-
Reboot and see if plymouth theme is not ugly anymore.

You have to revert the kubuntu forum workaround to see if the bug is fixed.

Anyway, while it looks much better with new packages, workaround from kubuntuforums is better. With workaround it works perfectly.

The problem that splash screen appears just for 2 seconds is not related to this bug, so open another bug for that.
@Stefan T.
We know that with workaround works perfectly, with this fix plymouth works out of the box and the target is not you or me, but average users.

Thanks, Alessandro, it's a great improvement in the look.
I have a password prompt that's way too big and difficult to confirm the password dots are registering when I type. It's the same with ubuntu logo too.
I've attached a plytoobig.png so you can see what I'm talking about.
Would it be possible to make the splash smaller so all the prompt and my entry are visible?

pauls (paulatgm) wrote : | #38 |
Stefan, I tried your suggestion and it causes my X server to crash on running out of memory about 1/2 the time. This must be a problem with the nvidia binary and the Vesa fb (just guessing), so an artwork fix would be preferred here.

Martin, I tested the package as suggested. As Sel Goona reported in comment #49, it's definitely better looking: please, compare Screenshot1 (before) with Screenshot2 (after). Extreme pixelation disappeared, but still it feels slightly improvable. Also, some comments follow:
- cursor keeps blinking on the upper left corner over a black screen, when one would expect the logo to appear instead;
- most of the times, the logo in the end doesn't appear at all, there's a short green flash followed instantly by the login screen;
- sometimes, while cursor blinks, some information is displayed as shown in Screenshot3 (sorry for the resolution, as the other 2, it's a picture and since this behavior cannot be reproduced at every login, I was unable to take a better shot);
- when computer is shut down, on the contrary, the logo seems to be always shown.
Anyway, thanks for all your efforts, and good work so far!

We cannot ask every single user to follow a workaround.
The fix must come (and quickly, because it's a mess for the marketing of Kubuntu) from the OFFICIAL REPOSITORY.
The bug is confirmed on Kubuntu 64bit freshly installed, Nvidia 8600M GT and official drivers in "hardware drivers" manager.
Same pattern:
- as long as NVidia proprietary drivers are not installed, Plymouth is fine.
- as soon as NVIdia proprietary drivers get installed, Plymouth becomes ugly

Fixed ? It's not fixed it'only a workaround.
Today i've updated kubuntu-
There are only a modification of the boot screen image.
The quality is poor, and there are font problem on displaying the crypt password box / data (see att.)
Why the ubuntu version is ok (and very nice), tested on the same computer ?
Why these difference on the (k)ubuntu version ?, I think there in the kubuntu version have to change only the Desktop enviroment (Kde/gome) , not the boot system or other software (only the logo, but it's only a image!)
Why can compete on desktop market with this "bugs" (see bug nr. 1) ?

This bug is about the plymouth theme rendering with dithered colors on the VGA fb driver. It's still not going to look as good with the binary video drivers as it will on the free ones, because the binary video drivers don't give us a suitable kernel framebuffer that we can write to.
If it looks better when running on Ubuntu, that's almost certainly because you don't have the binary drivers installed in Ubuntu.

The logo still looks much worse than the one from Jaunty. So how is it possible that the one from Jaunty was looking fine even with binary video drivers?
hector (mailbox-deandreis) wrote : | #79 |
Dear Mr Steve Langasek.
That you said on comment 76 is right (the ubuntu live session have open drivers, the installed kubuntu nvidia closed drivers).
But it's necessary to use the closed nvidia drivers to work on a PC.
And for these reason, most people use them, and also canonical include them .
I think that is necessary to made a "real fix", to have a better graphic on boot (see my previous post).
And consider that in previous version, we don't have this problem.
Swâmi Petaramesh (swami-petaramesh) wrote : | #80 |
I fail understanding how having _X11_ use NVidia drivers can have a damaging impact on an early bootsplash system capability to drive graphics, far before X11 is started... The Nvidia kernel module isn't supposed to be loaded when plymouth starts, is it ?
Philip Muškovac (yofel) wrote : | #81 |
Exactly, the open drivers provide a proper resoulution framebuffer to the kernel that is used for the splash (using kernel mode setting I think), as the proprietary nvidia drivers are unable to do so vga16fb is used instead to provide the framebuffer, but that gives a 640x480 16 colors screen by default.

Marco's procedure is actually incomplete. You shoud also add "set gfxpayload=keep" in /etc/grub.
Philip Muškovac (yofel) wrote : | #86 |
KBios: that's correct for karmic, in lucid you should rather set
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD
in /etc/default/grub and run update-grub.
Fran (fjbejarano) wrote : | #87 |
Ok the correct procedure is
1.- Add to /etc/default/grub
GRUB_GFXMODE=
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD
2.- $ echo FRAMEBUFFER=y | sudo tee /etc/initramfs-
3.- $ sudo update-grub && sudo update-initramfs -u
In my PC, the image is correct (the herzts is not correct) but, in my
portatil, with Nvidia 7600 go, this method doest'n work.

Can the developers please fix this bug. How can a workaround still exist without any comments from the developers on the status of the problem currently. Right now i have had to shift my linux os due to this issue as all i get is the ugliest plymount screen seen in the history of kubuntu. Everything seems to be still in "status quo". Terrible marketing really.
And yes those issues of surviving by adjusting grub and so on are all fine. But they make no sense to newbies. Kindly repair this damage being done to the heart of kubuntu.

(Comes from bug #571567):
Same problem here:
I installed a vanila Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 and updated everything using apt-get.
Then I installed KDE and up to this point, everything works normal.
Then I downloaded a couple of login screen themes and switched my default theme with one of those.
Then trouble started. t first, I viewed the low res logo at boot, with some aliasing errors. The boot proccess stops there and then I can not even switch to console mode with Ctrl+Alt+F1, the computer is just frozen.
I tried a trick: inserted the ubuntu cd-rom on drive and hard-rebooted the PC, then choose "boot from first hard disk" option and then I could log in to mi KDE desktop.
I reverted my login screen theme back to the default one, and rebooted. Now I see a splash screen reading "kubuntu" but the computer freezes again, keyboard is blocked, etc, same as before.
My PC currently only boots when using the CD-in-tray trick.

The workaround does not work on all graphic cards, especially not on laptop. So it isn't a workaround!!
How can we promote kubuntu when showing a bootscreen from the early '90?
The fix has help a little bit, but there is still lot of work to do!

You mean like comment #24, where it is requested that a proposed fix be tested, or #68, where we fix the bug? Just run the latest updates making sure lucid-updates is enabled (it is by default) and you'll get the fix.

The boot experience in lucid is epic fail. I have this problem with nvidia driver but and to my dell inspiron 1011 i have very long boot time. About 30 sec.
I dont know what they have done but i can see the result of what they have make.
This is very sad because everything else in this release of ubuntu works perfect.

On a 7600Go (Toshiba p100 laptop), a variant of #87 worked:
1) Allow FB for initramfs:
echo FRAMEBUFFER=y | sudo tee /etc/initramfs-
sudo update-initramfs -u
2) Checking highest (highest resolution and color depht) FB mode supported by hardware (requires hwinfo):
sudo apt-get install hwinfo
sudo hwinfo --framebuffer
3) Edit grub conf file to set selected FB mode:
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
Change GRUB_CMDLINE_
Save and:
sudo update-grub
Reboot to check if it work
For instance on my machine:
sudo hwinfo --framebuffer
Returned:

Config Status: cfg=new, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown
So highest FB supported mode is 0x318 (Hexa) = 792 (Decimal), thus in grub config:
GRUB_CMDLINE_
Did the trick...
Maybe this could be automated for proprietary installs by grub setup or update process, if this prove reliable by other users.
Please note that GRUB_GFXMODE modification did not have any effect for me, so this was still commented in my grub config...

Why is this "Fix Released"? Still getting this with a fresh install of Kubuntu 10.04 and ATI drivers. All updates applied.
Philip Muškovac (yofel) wrote : | #95 |
@Danny: because this is the best possible fix we currently have, it looked even worse before. That it still doesn't look very nice is tracked in bug 563878.
