Someone on a SUSE list got it working with this:

 mknod -m 666 /dev/dv1394 c 171 34

I understand that this makes a node for dv1394 with looser permissions, but I don't understand the whole thing. Is this useful, I'm not going to try, becasue I don't understand it.
