Bug Description

On fresh install of Ubuntu Mate 18.04 LTS, the KiCad standard version (no build, no ppa) as installed via "apt install" cannot be used as the cursor (small cross or large lines) is ghosted all over the screen. Redraw fixes the schematic but next move draws again the ghosting cursor over it. Checked also pcbnew, the problem there is ghosting cursor AND shrinked image in the upper left corner of the design area.

See attached pictures.

At the same h/w (HP pavilion 550-100nv, AMD A10-8750, no extra graphics card, no extra graphics driver) the problem does not exist on Ubuntu Mate 17.10 with KiCad standard version for that (kicad (4.0.6+dfsg1-1).

Me too, on two different machines. Standard Ubuntu 18.04 installs. Problem affects both Unity and gnome (Ubuntu) desktops.

Yes, I have the same problem reported above, on Ubuntu 18.04.

Thomas Stolt (crayfish) wrote :

Exactly the same behaviour here, on a Dell Precision 5520, Ubuntu 18.04.

Currently I am workarounding this by having Kicad running on Ubuntu 17.10 in a VirtualBox that I am sharing the folder with. Pain.

Thomas Stolt (crayfish) wrote :

I can confirm that, the new PPA seems to work for me. Thx for pointing this out Darren!

It worked, thank you.

@Nick- This bug is against the kicad build on Ubuntu. Why did you mark it invalid?

Seth Hillbrand (sethh) wrote :

Until this is fixed in the Ubuntu package, we shouldn't close it.

status: Invalid → Confirmed
Esteban Lucchesi (elucches) wrote :

Exactly the same problem on Xubuntu (fine on 17.10 but cursor ghosting on 18.04). (Acer Aspire 5736Z.)

Nick Østergaard (nickoe) wrote :

@Seth, ok I didnt't notice it was not for the PPA. Ubuntu maintainers need to address this.

GeorgeVita (georgevita) wrote :

Please note that a typical user would try only the formal version of KiCad without adding a PPA or building from source! As Ubuntu 17.10 end of life comes this month (July 2018), and the 18.04 version is not usable, KiCad runs only on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS !

With a freshly installed 18.04 LTS, I also experience this problem with KiCad.

I can confirm this. After updating from Ubuntu 17.10 to 18.04. See screenshot

Unbelievable that this still isn't fixed, as Kicad is the most popular hobby EE package out there.

Alex Faveluke (faveluka) wrote :

This affects me too. I'd rather not have to install ppas on my own. I think Kicad is a pretty important package.

Hello every one. I hqve the same issue with the following configuration :

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS
Release: 18.04
Codename: bionic
Package: 4.0.7+dfsg1-1ubuntu2

It is on a jetson nano from NVIDIA.

How can we know if there are any update ?

I tried to install it as recommended on kicad offical website. But the behavior is the same.

Adrien (alaveau) wrote :

Hello,

I just solved it by using the info in this link : https://kicad-pcb.org/download/ubuntu/

In the end it means upgrading to Kicad 5.1
