Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. Kubuntu 8.10 reached EOL on April 30 2010.
Please see this document for currently supported Kubuntu releases:

Unfortunately this means that there will be no more bugfixes for Kubuntu 8.10. It is also recommended that you upgrade, if you have not already.
