Bug Description

Recently, I tried using kppp to connect to the Internet using a phone, connected
by USB, which accepts AT commands.
I set up the phone #, username/password, device, etc correctly, and tried to
connect. However, kppp would not connect, stalling at "Modem Ready" for a few
seconds before saying "The modem does not respond". Using the debian/ubuntu PPP
configuration tool pppconfig, I can use this device perfectly fine.

Could something be done about this? I think it is caused by kppp waiting for
some type of response from the "modem" before any AT commands are sent (maybe
this phone sends a null character or something to the computer atthe beginning
of the connection process).

did you try "query modem" from the modem's tab, what happens if you open the Terminal from the
same tab, you're able to type ex. AT and get a OK back ?

dialing through kppp returns, after CONNECT pppd died unexpectedly return code : 1
worked fine with pppconfig
best thing should be to link kppp config file to pppconfig ones

Is this still reproducable on kde 3.5.2, kubuntu dapper?

No one that I have found actually uses a phone in this configuration, so we have no way of testing this. Could this be a bug upstream?

I have KPPP working on Kubuntu dapper flight 6 kde 3.5.2. It is quite difficult to set up and I had the same problem in Breezy, but got it working finally. I have used winmodems and external modems and they work very well in KPPP. I have a guide with screenshots that can be uploaded somewhere, but it is about 10 pages and I could not get images pasted in a wikie howto. At present I have a dapper problem with the drivers for a Smartlink modem bug #40824, but KPPP still works before a reboot.
Please email me if anyone wants the guide to post somewhere.

Andre

This may be the same problem I encountered with kubuntu 6.06.
I was getting the message "pppd died The remote system is required to authenticate itself" when kppp was run from a terminal.
I read the kppp help and I found a section where they suggests to edit the /etc/ppp/options file or to simply remove it.
I removed it and kppp successfully worked.
