The screen resolution configuration program does not run with root privileges,
so it cannot have changed the ownership of this file. It must have been
something else that happened during the same session.

What other programs did you run during that session? Did you make any other
configuration changes? Anything which prompted you for the root password? Did
you use sudo at all?
