Today 2009-09-17, I applied the 174 updates which were stacked up waiting. While those updates trashed many things, they did fix this problem. I am once again able to make safety copies of books onto my trusty LS-120.
Please mark this as closed. I don't know which particular update fixed it, but it was fixed.
