I believe the "problem" is with the printer: firefox, by default, prints headers and footers very close to the edge of the paper and many consumer printers do not support printing on the edges.

Anyhow, printing in Firefox in Linux should be improved (setting edges is unreliable, you cannot set any useful printer options, ...), if not by the Firefox team, maybe Ubuntu developers could take the job?
I don't know about xprint, but AFAIK Ubuntu build has xprint disabled. Does it feature a more complete printer-options interface?
