i'm having the same problem on a thinkpad t60.
just so you know, this bug [url=http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=469748]has been reported upstream[/url]. [url=http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=469748#c17]it appears[/url] that the hal guys switched the type or the brightness variable from uint to int to uint again, and probably confused the gnome power management guys.
hopefully someone will fix this soon.
