Bug Description

Binary package hint: kubuntu-desktop

I installed 15 april's daily-snapshot of Kubuntu

I used settings manager to inform that I was using grub (with "kcmshell kdm") and so, when I click on restart at logoff or in kdm, I'm able to choose which grub entry will be booted.
There are no problem with this in kdm, but at logoff, when I choose an entry, screen simply locks

This bug only occurs in Kubuntu_7.04. Ow to inform launchpad of this ?

When screen is locked, just press escape to return back to your session, but after, logoff will become impossible

Could you please download the official release of Kubuntu 7.04 and see if the problem still exists?

Thanks.

yes, but my planning only allows me to test it in two days. I'll have the
opportunity to test it with another computer.

Please let us know what types of video cards are in the machines affected by this, if you have ubuntu-desktop (Gnome) installed, and if you are using any 3d effects such as compiz or beryl.

no, the two machine i tested were wis an nvidia card and an ati card. neither with 3d effects nor without.
It can occur only with kubuntu because it seems to be a kdm problem

If I understood the current problem is a black screen after logout. Do you have this problem only with livecd or also with the installed version of Kubuntu 7.04?

Morgan GERMAIN (morgan-germain) wrote : How to reproduce the problem

with the INSTALLED version of Kubuntu 7.04

(It isn't usefull to inform kde of grub's configuration with a livecd...)
To reproduce the problem, simply do this :

Install Kubuntu 7.04 & update it
Go to settings manager --> Advanced tab --> login manager.
Enter administrator mode
In the shutdown tab, go to miscellaneous-->boot manager and then, select 'grub'

Normally, on reboot button, you should be able to choose which grub entry will be booted, but with
this release (Kubuntu 7.04), when you 'long-click' on reboot button, the list appears
and the screen locks when you choose each grub entry.

When screen is locked, press Escape to go out of this menu and then, you are no
more able to view the logout menu.

Thanks for your useful information, this bug is reproducible also in development version.

This is a duplicate of Bug #165063.

Also, I can confirm this bug on four completely different machines, using both Feisty and Gutsy.

More people are reporting this problem in the forums here: http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/92779/?highlight= (in German) and here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=445224 (in English). This is an absolute pain in the ass, and it is trivial to reproduce (or is there anyone who doesn't suffer from this bug?), so I really hope someone can fix it.

The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the
development release - Intrepid Ibex. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .

Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

I think this issue is not problem of upstream, becouse this cannot be reproductible in Debian with KDE 3.5 or Open Suse with KDE 3.5.
Anyway, i will test this in Kubuntu Intrepid Ibex (KDE4) when Alpha 6 to be released.

Okay, i just have tested it on Intrepid, in a recent snapshot.
Now logout screen does not freeze, computer reboot. But the problem now is that always reboot into default grub entry, and not into entry selected from restart menu.
Conclusion: There is not freeze on Intrepid, but this feature just does not work.

and so, there are two different bugs :

it freezes in Kubuntu Feisty, Gutsy, Hardy-Kde3
it doesn't work in Intrepid

In KDE 4, this bug is not applicable, it only happens in KDE 3 Kubuntu versions (since 7.04 to 8.04).
In KDE 4 versions this feature is currently broken, but it is a different problem than the original freeze reported in this bug.

Closing this bug since the issue is non-applicable, and chasing further issues in this report would just confuse things.
