Bug Description

Binary package hint: klipper

Copy and paste with OpenOffice.org + KDE4 on Intrepid seem to work intermittently with Klipper; closing it causes them to function properly again.

Thank you for your report!

We could use more information, however:
What version of Ubuntu are you using?
What version of Openoffice?

Also, please describe the bug in some detail, including the steps that lead to the bug, what is expected to take place, and what actions you have used to rectify this.

(Bug triagers don't necessarily want or need to follow a forum thread when all the useful information can be put into the report itself)

I am having the same issue on two computers.

ii kate 4:4.2.2-0ubuntu1 KDE 4 Advanced Text Editor
ii openoffice.org-writer 1:3.0.1-7ubuntu1 OpenOffice.org office suite - word processor
ii klipper 4:4.2.2-0ubuntu1 clipboard utility for KDE 4

To reproduce :
 1. Run OpenOffice.org Writer
 2. Run kate
 3. Type some text in OO writer. Select it and copy it with "Right click" and then "Copy". CTRL+C seems to work
 4. Select the kate window. If the bug is happening, the transition to the kate window will be very slow (about one second)
 5. Try to paste the text using "Right click" and then "Paste". If it works, add some letters to the text in OpenOffice and retry. For me, two tries where enough to make the problem happen.

Using Konqueror instead of Kate change nothing. However, if I close clipper or disable the "Prevent empty clipboard" option, then I cannot reproduce it anymore.

Clipboard is an important feature and these problem was very annoying for a non-geek to which I asked to test Kubuntu. Therefore I suggest that either Klipper or the "Prevent empty clipboard" options are disabled until a proper solution is found.

Thank you, please ask if you have any question,
Brice

I have the same bug as Brice described. It is easy to reproduce:
1. Open OpenOffice Writer and another random application
2. Type some text, select it
3. Press ctrl+c several times
4. Try to switch to the other application on the taskbar
5. If you could switch, go back to OO and repeat from step 3.
In a few tries the bug occurs. The desktop freezes completely for about five seconds.

Running Klipper from Konsole the following output is produced for every occurrence (yes, for every single occurrence exactly ten lines are produced):
QClipboard: Cannot transfer data, no data available
QClipboard: Cannot transfer data, no data available
QClipboard: Cannot transfer data, no data available

For what it's worth, the plasma freezing issue on OOo copy also happens without Klipper running.

I can confirm this using Kubuntu 9.10 with KDE 4.3.2 and Openoffice 3.1.1. Also, closing Klipper doesn't solve the problem for me.

To be more precise: Closing Klipper does solve the copy&paste problem but not the plasma freezing issue (just as S. Christian Collins said before).

Can somebody please help with this issue? I'd appreciate it a lot because the bug is SO annoying. I'm copying and pasting a lot and almost everytime I do I am confronted with a delay of 3 to 5 seconds. I don't know what to do, does anybody have more ideas?

Hello jannollo,
I am not an expert but i can tell you what i did, to improve the problem
(temporarily).
I simply closed the Klipper application. Klipper is not indispensable for me.
I can work without it.
That is not really a solution for the problem.
At least copy and paste is now working properly.

David

Thanks for your comment David, but I already knew that.. Closing Klipper makes possible to paste, but the long delay (plasma freezes for about 3 to 5 seconds) is still there. That way, also without using Klipper, it is a really annoying bug.

Still no solution, I'm kind of desperate.. Can't anybody help with this? Anymore ideas? It's so annoying. I'm working with text documents and copy&paste almost all day and due to this error everything slows down so much and I'm really stressed out...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Kubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Kubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates.

I tried my best to reproduce it, but failed. I use KDE 4.7.4, so it might have been fixed?

It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Kubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect 311251 and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
