I have tried to reproduce by following the steps:

1. open kwrite. write accented characters
2. tools -> encoding -> automatic
3. write accented characters

and worked just fine for me. Also changing the second step with:

2. tools -> encoding -> iso-8859-1

and also worked just fine.
