I just had the same problem on hardy-alpha5 ... 8-((

I have nvidia 6200 graphics card, and 1280*1024 lcd screen connected...

starting displayconfig-gtk gives all emtpy values in all boxes...

System/Preferences/ScreenResolution only offers 800x600 and 640x480.
