Same problem on Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 x64. After reboot, Alt+F1, Alt+F2, ... switches to console. After logout/login works fine (opens main menu, run dialog, etc.).

Hardware: Asus UL30A with Intel GMA 4500MHD.
