Further investigation reveals that I had an instance of jackd running (I strongly suspect a certain son of mine on this). It appears that removing this instance allows kaffeine to work again.

It also explains the lack of sound (that together with a lack of headphones [see previous piece of blame for the reason]).

However, since xine is doing the rendering and it works natively, as does mplayer, why does kaffeine blow up?
