I meanwhile found out that "phonon-backend-xine" had been missing. Now it works fine!
However, I still believe this is a bug: Kaffeine should depend on all required packages, and if some plugin is missing, an error message should appear. Without "phonon-backend-xine", the user does not get any feedback at all when Kaffeine fails to play media. (It should not be necessary to search internet forums for a solution...)
