Bug Description

Binary package hint: k3b

It would be nice if there was an automatic fetching script to get the mp3 decoder package (libk3b2-mp3) just like there is in Amarok in Edgy.

This should be possible to do after the https://features.launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+spec/easy-codec-installation specification is completed.

Well, it will still take some changes to k3b, itself, which someone will have to be willing to work on. Completion of the easy-codec-installation specification will just make this more feasible. I'm not volunteering myself to do this (although I may be interested in trying).

Wait, why can't k3b just recommend libk3b2-mp3. Is it because the library is in universe while k3b is in main? It does already suggest it.
And how is it better for k3b to pull it in when you want to run it instead of when you're installing it?

I guess that lets it pull it in if you enable a universe repository after installing k3b.

All of the recommends need to be in main too.

Kubuntu-restricted-extras exists now, which fixes this - it doesnt automatically get called to be installed, when running k3b though.

Kubuntu-restricted-extras solves the problem for Kubuntu users, but not for Ubuntu users who have installed ubuntu-restricted-extras, are not satisfied with brasero and then install k3b via gnome-app-install. I know of an Ubuntu user who wanted to change to another distro because "k3b cannot burn mp3s" - he ran exactly into this problem.

The real solution would be to let amarok automatically fetch the packages when needed.
As a newbie it is unlikely that you know what kubuntu-restricted-extras even is.

This has been done for the KDE4 version of K3b in Kubuntu 9.10.
