Unlike the original poster, I needed to edit madwifi.conf.

I had a problem with jockey restoring the ath5k driver after de-activating madwifi. ath5k remained blacklisted and I had to edit /etc/modprobe.d/madwifi.conf to restore it manually.

Reason I tried madwifi was connection problems due to bad signal from wireless router. But restoring the defailt ath5k driver left me with no wireless due to ath5k being blacklisted after discovering router deficiency.

I probably would not have been so persistent had I been at home, but we are visiting relatives and there was no other option than to get this issue solved. My brother-in-law had all the rj-11 jacks filled with his things.
