no, you're not. I just wonder why you get the strange results you are getting. Please do a "sudo tar -cjf /tmp/shirish.tar.bz2 /home/shirish/.aptitude /home/shirish/.aptoncd" and attach the resulting /tmp/shirish.tar.bz2
